MLM Versus Playstation 3

Perhaps your biggest competitor in the MLM industry this holiday season won't be another Network Marketing opportunity, but rather Sony and their mighty Playstation 3.

If you are a networker then you know from experience that prospects love to use the old "I don't have any money objection". Well we all know that most of the time this is really just a polite way of your prospect telling you their just not interested in what you have to offer. It has always amazed me at how uncomfortable prospects are with telling someone their not interested. Even some of the most highly professional people can't bring themselves to saying thanks but no thanks. Instead they lead you on a wild goose chase of following up with them.

As networkers we have learned that people are people and their is no changing that. If a prospect is truly interested in what you have to offer they will find away to beg or borrow to make it happen. There is a strong probability that you or someone in your downline will speak to a prospect this holiday shopping season that will say no to your opportunity because of money. It's also probable that same person will stand in line for hours to spend $600.00 they probably don't have on a Playstation 3. In fact some of you reading this article may know of people who camped outside overnight to be one of the first in line for a Playstation 3. Amazing what people will do for things they really want and yet can't probably afford. This is why you can't take a prospects money objection personally. People are people and you your job is not to change them. Your job is to find people with a burning hot desire and are willing to change. Your ultimately looking for people that are willing to reinvest back into themselves and their families.

Maybe as networkers we all need to take a lesson from Sony. Maybe we need to do a better job of creating that burning hot desire in our prospects. A desire so great that they will be willing to beg or borrow for the money to sign up in our opportunities. Sony expects to do $600 Million in sales this holiday season by moving just one million Playstations. Amazing, isn't it? One Million households with the Playstation 3 by Christmas, many households of which probably couldn't really afford it but bought it anyways. There is no doubt that you or someone in your downline will loose a prospect to Sony and their mighty Playstation 3. Don't worry though, because when the hype is over and everyone has their new Playstation 3 they will be looking for a way to pay off those credit card bills. That is where we come in, and we have to be ready to greet them head on with our own burning hot desires.

Choose Your MLM & XELR8

For most people their first network marketing company will choose them. The reason I says this is because people don't usually wake up one morning and decide to join a network marketing business. They are usually approached with the opportunity by a stranger or someone they know. For this reason many people end up choosing the wrong business. The word business is at the end of home based business for a reason. Network marketing / MLM is a business and therefore requires sound business decisions. Business decisions often mean that you have to over look your personal appeal to the opportunity.

With just about all MLM's the concept of leverage is the same, but there are fundamental differences in the way MLM opportunities are structured and marketed . Do you remember what your life was like ten years ago?



How about five years ago or even two years back?



I find it astonishing that many of us have only vague recollections of our lives from just one year ago. We say that life is too short and that life is a gift. How is it then that we take this precious gift for granted?

The Four Pillars of a Successful MLM Company

There are 4 pillars to success to look for in a Network Marketing company.

• Products and Services
  
• Systems & Tools for moving the products and services
  
• Compensation
  
• Management

Products and Services- First and foremost you have to feel that the companies products and services are value added and unique only to that company. Do you really want to sell the same widget that everyone else has? The best way to determine if you have a winner for a product or service is to actually try the products or services the company is selling. If the MLM's products or services do something for you then you know that most likely you have something that others will benefit from.

When evaluating a companies products it is important that you also understand that just because it works for you, it may not work for everyone. Don't have unrealistic expectations about the product or service when you try it. It doesn't matter how great the product is, there will always be nay sayers that will try and poke holes in what ever you have to offer. So don't be scarred off if your close friend or relative says that the product did nothing for them.

I remember trying a very well known juice supplement from a distributor in very fast growing MLM. The product did nothing for me, however that did not necessarily mean that it was a bad product or a bad MLM. The company was doing fantastic and breaking some industry records. The product was obviously doing something for someone. You have to be realalistic in your expectations of the product or service and realize that there will be people that will love your product or service even though your not completely sold on it. I will say that it does make a better fit if you enjoy the product and feel confident that others will also. So try to be realalistic and open minded in your trial of the products and services.

Remember that what you are really looking for is a product that will encourage retention of your newly sponsored people and their customers. If you don't have a solid unique product you will experience allot of fall out in your organization. A good metwork marketing /MLM company will provide a solid product at a reasonable price that is also unique only to that company. When it comes to nutritional companies make sure they have some sort of sampling capability that is easy to hand out, is free, and affordable for the average person. Last but not least, make sure that your product or service is easy to explain. Network marketing is about the ease of duplication. Try to stay away from products that are highly technical and laden with excessive amounts of science.

Heavy hitters and management know that their will be fall out. They bank on the fact that those who quit will stay on the product even if they don't go on to build a network of customers or distributors. This is where a good portion of the sales and commissions come from in the network marketing industry. Make sure that what you are marketing will ensure a higher rate of retention with both customers and new recruits. Once you have evaluated the companies products and services it's time to evaluate the system in place to help you move that product. What does the company provide for systems and marketing tools? These tools are critical to moving the product and creating sales and new distributors. Look for my upcoming post on MLM systems and tools.

How about those Tigers!!

It's been since 1987 that the Detroit Tigers have made it to the playoffs and since 1984 that they won their last World Series. It was great to see the players return to the field and spray the fans with campaign after their series clinching win over the New York Yankees. It's a time of celebration here in Detroit. We have waited along time for a winning team. We know we still have a ways to go, but even if we loose we are still very proud of our Tigers.

The Tigers were considered the underdogs against the all might New York Yankees. Jim Leyland and his Tigers shocked baseball fans around the country. While watching the game I couldn't help but feel a little guilty for not paying closer attention to the Tigers during the last several years. I know there are some loyal and die hard fans that have stuck it out even through a 119 game loosing season. It reminds me of the determination and belief that is so critical in reaching success in network marketing. One must endure many loosing seasons before reaching that winning season. When you really think about it sports and MLM are really quite synonymous with one another. These loyal die hard fans never gave up on their team. They believed and preserved knowing that someday things would turn around.

We all know there is a physical preparation with sports, but what about the mental preparation? The Tigers let the Kansas City Royals sweep and deny them the divsion title that the Tigers were expected to win. They were in a loosing steak just before the first game with the Yankees. So what was it that turned them around and helped them come back and win 3 straight games to clinch the series against the Yankees? I like to think it was the coaching of Jim Leyland. I think Jim Leyland was instrumental in getting through to them that they were there playing against the Yankees because they deserved to be there. They had already proven that they had the skill and the talent to be there, they just needed to believe they were good enough to beat the Yankees.

How many of us really believe in ourselves, our talents, and our abilities? How many of us believe we deserve to be standing on stage telling a room full of hundreds to even thousands of people our stories of how we achieved success in our network marketing business? Just like the Tigers, you have to see it, and believe it, if your ever going to achieve it.

Making Your List And Calling It Twice

You have undoubtedly heard of the traditional making a list campaign that most all network marketing companies subscribe to. Yeah, I know, who wants to make a list and pester their friends and family? Unfortunately sometimes we have to get uncomfortable to get comfortable. Think of it this way- If you were starting a restaurant or any other type of brick and mortar business, wouldn't you want your friends and family to know about it? Of course you would.It's much easier to sell to someone that already knows and trusts us versus someone who we have just met. I prefer that my new IBO's only contact those on their list that they think would be most receptive to the concept of leverage through network marketing. The others on their list I would prefer them to first introduce the product and not the income opportunity.


Before I got involved in the mlm industry I would never have imagined I would be talking to friends and family about a network marketing opportunity. I was totally turned off by the idea of network marketing. To me networkers were just a bunch of believers that were being brainwashed. Oddly enough things changed and I was now in Network Marketing and I was excited about hosting a PBR (Private Business Reception) at my home with all the people my wife and I knew. We were excited and making our list and writing down all the names we could. We were going to pack our living room full of people and make some money! We didn't care if our friends and family thought we were crazy or not. All we knew was that we were excited and sick and tried of being sick and tired!

So we called down our list and we got less than 10% to show up for a living room presentation that was put on by our upline. We ended up making almost $2000.00 that evening. Just enough to almost cover what it cost for us to start our business. We were pretty much at a break even point and accomplished this in less than one week. We then later went back to our list of people that we hadn't gotten a hold of. Within 48 hours we had personally sponsored 22 people from that list. We were now making some decent money. We had our upline cheering us on. It felt great and we were on top of the world! We made our list and checked it twice.Making a list worked well for my wife and I, however that doesn't mean it will work for everyone. There will be those people that will never approach anyone they know until they feel they can say they are successful. There will always be secret agents in your organization. That is why it is helpful to have other resources and tools available for the secret agents who are not ready to tap into their warm market yet. It's important that you don't push them to tap into their warm markets. The opportunity you choose should have more than just list making in the tool box. Afterall, you can't build a house with just a hammer.Tools and systems play a key role in achieving success in mlm. I will talk more about tools and systems in a later post.

The Energy Drink Craze

Have you ever noticed how many people are turning to energy drinks for that instant pick me up? In fact the craze for energy drinks is so big right now that in 2005 energy drink sales grew to $ 3.3 Billion dollars. Sales for energy drinks have gone up 700% over the last 5 years, and in the July 2006 issue of Fortune Magazine it was stated that for the first time ever soft drink sales have fallen in large part due to energy drink sales. Energy drink sales have become the fastest growing segment of all beverage sales. They are expected to out sell all other categories of soft drinks over the next several years. Interesting isn't it?

What does this say about our society? What it is happening that we need to dose ourselves up with tons of sugar and caffeine to get through the day? I don't know about you, but it doesn't sound like too many people are living a live of design to me.

Money will come and go, but our health is our biggest asset. Unfortunately for many it's not until they have comprimised their health that they make a conscious decision to live a life of design. Don't procrastinate another day. Make a conscious decision to live a life of design!

The Classic MLM Tortes and Hare

I find Network Marketing to be quite synomonous with the classics story of the Tortes and the Hare. The Hare in Network Marketing seizes the opportunity and engages very early on. The Hare will work the business more than 7-10 hours a week and will have will have visited just about every Starbucks in their local area. The Hare will have 3 footed every employee at their local grocery store. They will have worked the system and utilized all the tools at their disposal. One would expect that the Hare would win the race down the road to success, however often this tends not to be the case.

So why is the hare greeted with failure and not success? Most of the time it's because the Hare had a sponsor that over hyped the business and sent them on a sponsoring binge. They were not fully prepared for the objections that they would encounter on the path to success. Success is a process in which one must endure and overcome failure through a course of time. Perhaps Thomas Edison said it best when he said "I never failed once. It just happened to be a 2000-step process." It took Edison 2000 failures before he was successful at creating the incandescent lightbulb. Edison saw each failure as an opportunity to start again. When you sponsor a Hare you must explain to them the fundamentals of the industry. You must make sure that their goals are realalistic and obtainable. If you pump them with hype and high expectations they will exhaust themselves early on. The truth is that they didn't really fail, they just didn't see their failure as a process leading to success. Henry Ford said it well when he said "Failure is simply the opportunity to begin again, this time more intelligently."

So what about the Tortes? The Tortes will stroll drown road to success and take in the scenery. They are just as excited as the Hare, but are equipped with realalistic expectations and goals. They know that success is a process. The Tortes knows that they will most likely have to endure some failures along the way. They will take the time to improve themselves through books, CD's, company meetings, and mentorship. The Tortes knows that amateurs convince while professionals sort. The Tortes will look for the people that are looking for them. Through a course of time your Tortes becomes your Hare, but this time you have will have armed your Hare with a bullet proof shell.

What separates the 5% ers from the 95% ers in Network Marketing is simply a persons ability to overcome fear. We all have a choice, we can either let fear cripple us or let fear motivate and propel us to new heights.

I remember my very first network marketing experience. I had just recently joined the fist company I was with when I received a 3-way call from my sponsor and a top income earner. I remember what Mark said to me as if it were yesterday. The reason I remember it so well is because what he told me has held true throughout my time in this industry. What he said was "you will find that the people most likely to build a business with you, are the people that are truly sick and tired of being sick and tired". Boy, was he ever right.

People that are truly sick and tired of being sick and tired are not idled by fear. They have turned fear into a constant driving force. They will not buckle under criticism or rejection. They are tired of living a life of reaction and are looking for a life of design. They start their business knowing that it won't be easy and that their belief will likely be tested along the way. These are the people that I refer to as the heroes in Network Marketing. These are the people you see on stage at your companies events. These are the people that your listening intently to and taking notes on as they speak. These people did what most people can't do. What is that you ask? They overcame their fears.

MLM - Hard or Easy?

In my opinion MLM is both easy and simple. The actual work and concept is easy, however the results are often hard. I think it is just the human nature of people that makes it so difficult. Many times have I sponsored someone who was genuinely looking to change their lives only to later have them fall victim to the microwave mentality. People are people and there is no getting around it. I don't care how easy you make the opportunity.

There will always be people that will join just to quiet that nagging voice deep inside. It is the voice that's been saying "you need to make a change". Most people ignore that voice until it gets so loud they finally do something about it. So what do they do? They sign up in your company and expect instant gratification and then quit within 90 days. They bought themselves a dose of hope and can now arrogantly tell that nagging voice "see, it just doesn't work".

As long as people procrastinate and are resistant to change they will always be where their at. That is one reason why so many people fail in this industry. MLM often requires us to get uncomfortable. People resist getting uncomfortable all the while expecting that things will happen. The turth is that you have go out and make things happen. Your income will only exceed your personal growth in this industry.

The Credibility Issue

The # 1 hurdle we face as networkers is establishing credibility in the eyes, hearts, and minds of our prospects. Your prospects need to have a feeling of trust and legitimacy with the products you sell. People that are new to the industry of network marketing are looking for unique and legitimate products that are value added. The are likely to look at the products first and the income opportunity second. So how exactly do your earn their trust through the product?

Many Networkers align themselves with privately held companies that boast of large sales, however can you actually see what the sales of the company are?
